Northfield

Village of Northfield

The Village of Northfield is nestled just beyond the bustling energy of Chicago in the North Shore. It is perfect for discerning families who value their privacy and a laid-back lifestyle. Living in Northfield is comfortable by nature and connected by choice, so you can have what you want in life and still be yourself.

Settlers first arrived in Northfield in the 1850s to farm hay and grain, packing straw from the Skokie Swamps, mushrooms and horseradish. But the community changed dramatically in the early 1920s when the Skokie Valley Line of the North Shore Railway was built. The Village began to attract other North Shore families who liked its small size and remote country atmosphere. Today, more than 5,000 people call Northfield home.

Located only 17 miles from the City of Chicago via highway or commuter train, the Village of Northfield offers the beauty of a natural North Shore forest community with convenient access to downtown urban life. Housing styles range from quaint century old properties, to modern condominiums, to the most modern upscale mansions.

Northfield has easy access to two of Chicago's biggest highway systems: I-94 and I-294. It is bordered by the communities of Northbrook, Glenview, Winnetka and Wilmette.

Northfield's shopping district features a mix of antique shops, gift stores and specialty retailers. Dining options in the village are diverse and abundant, with many restaurants offering inviting al fresco seating during the summer.

The Northfield Community Center, built in 1998, contains a full size gym, batting cage, basketball hoops, fitness center, residents center, and board room.

The Village of Northfield offers a style of living suitable to all types of people. Families with school age children will enjoy some of the best schools in north suburban Chicago, while senior citizens will enjoy the largest and best-attended senior center in the area offering a wealth of programs and services.

Residents enjoy extensive bicycle and jogging trails as well as the boating, wooded hiking trails and bridle paths through the Skokie Lagoons Forest Preserve. Northfield is one of the few North Shore communities that issues licenses for keeping horses.

The Northfield Parks are located throughout the community within the neighborhoods, creating an intimate and friendly neighborhood gathering place.

Northfield's schools are often called the "crown jewel" of the community. Why the success? Factors such as: high student test scores, spending per pupil and low student-teacher ratios. Also low faculty turnover, a cost-conscious approach to spending and a solid partnership between parents, children and the community also help Northfield's school thrive. High school students attend New Trier High School. Several private elementary and secondary schools also serve the Northfield area.
